Dentures that don't look like dentures

Dentures have moved on considerably from the false teeth of popular imagination. Made with quality materials, fitted precisely and designed with aesthetics in mind, modern dentures can look remarkably natural and work far better than the loose, sore appliances many people associate with the word.

About dentures

Dentures that don't look like dentures

Complete and partial dentures

Complete dentures replace all the teeth in an arch when no natural teeth remain. Partial dentures replace one or more missing teeth when some natural teeth are still present. Both are made to fit your mouth precisely and designed to look as natural as possible. The type, the materials and the design depend on how many teeth are missing, the condition of the remaining teeth and gums, your bone, and your preferences.

Why fit matters

Ill-fitting dentures are the most common reason people are unhappy with them. A denture that does not fit moves when you eat and speak, causes sore spots, and can accelerate bone loss in the jaw over time. Getting it right takes careful measurement, quality materials, and enough appointments to trial and refine the fit and appearance before the final set is made. We do not rush that.

Implant-retained dentures

If your dentures move, feel loose, or do not give you confidence when eating, speaking or smiling, an implant overdenture may be the answer. It looks and feels like a conventional denture but clips onto two to four implants placed in the jaw, which gives it a stability that suction and adhesive cannot match. It still comes out for cleaning, but stays firmly in place when worn, and the implants help preserve the jawbone.

Implants are placed and usually left to heal for around three months before the denture is connected. Depending on its condition, your existing denture can sometimes be adapted to clip on; otherwise a new one is made. Compared with a full set of fixed implant teeth, an overdenture is usually the more affordable option, and for many patients it is a good balance of stability, comfort and cost.

Common questions

How do I know if my dentures fit properly?

If they move when you eat or speak, cause sore spots or feel loose, they almost certainly do not fit as well as they should. Ill-fitting dentures are very common. A properly fitted set takes careful measurement, quality materials and enough appointments to refine the result, and it is worth addressing both for comfort and for the long-term health of your jawbone.

What's the difference between complete and partial dentures?

Complete dentures replace all the teeth in an arch when no natural teeth remain. Partial dentures replace one or more missing teeth when some natural teeth are still present. Both are made to fit your mouth and designed to look natural; we will explain which suits your situation.

Are implant-retained dentures better than regular dentures?

They clip onto two to four implants, giving a stability that conventional suction and adhesive cannot match, and they help preserve the jawbone. The denture still comes out for cleaning but stays firmly in place when worn. For many patients the difference is considerable, and they are worth considering if stability has been a problem.

Can I get dentures in one appointment?

Getting dentures right takes several appointments: precise measurements, trials of the fit and appearance, and adjustments before the final set is completed. Rushing is one of the main reasons dentures end up poorly fitted, so we take the time to get it right from the start.
